![]() Fascinating Stories of a Survivor
Toronto, ON (Vocus/PRWEB) February 27, 2011 Born into a Jewish family, Dr. Norbert Kerenyi has lived a rather eventful life. He has survived harrowing times through the Holocaust and communism and enjoyed happier times under the democratic system of Canada. He preserves these memories as he shares Stories of a Survivor, his book published through Xlibris.
The author’s whole life has been interesting due to the events happening to him and around him. Stories of a Survivor contains a mixture of tales from his childhood to the time of Holocaust and communism, to stories from Canada in the democratic system to different places where he lived, as well as stories about friends and companions of his life. Dr. Kerenyi has started writing his experiences in the form of short stories after his childhood friend Agnes Heller encouraged him to pen them down, lest they disappear upon his death.
Every story in Stories of a Survivor stands independently and does not follow any time sequence. Through the author’s eyes, readers will come to understand those dark days that he had to survive. Though his time in the Holocaust and communism were relatively short compared to his life in the democratic system, those days for him were the most significant.
“I am writing these stories with the hope that in addition to me, they will be interesting for others and will contribute to some extent to understand those dark days that I had to survive. And also contribute to the appreciation of Canada and the democratic system,” shares the author.

![]() Food Boxes Help Israeli and Russian Jews in Need to Celebrate Passover
Chicago and Jerusalem (Vocus/PRWEB) April 14, 2011 Unfortunately, in Israel today one in three children lives below the poverty line, and there are thousands more families in the former Soviet Union who are in desperate need with no resources to celebrate the Passover holiday. Many are elderly Holocaust survivors living in shocking poverty who have no family and are barely getting by on social security.
“For these men and women, being able to purchase the special foods needed to observe Passover is out of the question,” Rabbi Eckstein said. “In fact, many must make heart-rending choices every day between buying food or medicine, paying the rent, or keeping themselves warm.”
About one-third of the distribution will go to Jewish homes in Israel where the IFCJ, with Colel Chabad, Yad B’Yad, and Latet, is delivering 11,000 food boxes in Jerusalem and other cities where the need is greatest. Also, the IFCJ is giving out 1,518 food boxes to elderly Holocaust survivors in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and ten other towns and regions across Israel. The boxes include fresh produce, matzah, canned food, salt, sugar, matzah flour, mayonnaise, wine, and juice.
To help isolated and needy Jews in the former Soviet Union, the remaining two-thirds of the distribution, or approximately 28,000 food boxes, are being delivered before Passover with the help of partners Chamah and the Federation of Jewish Communities (FJCIS). More than half (15,000 packages) are being given to poverty-stricken families in Moscow alone. The boxes contain kosher products, including matzah and grape juice for the Seder, plus vegetables, beans, potato flour, and other food staples.
FIRST SEDER IN ISRAEL FOR ETHIOPIAN JEWS
In addition to the food distribution project, the IFCJ, together with the Jewish Agency for Israel, is providing a Seder meal to 5,500 Ethiopian immigrants in sixteen absorption centers throughout Israel where they live while learning the language, Israeli culture, and job skills.
The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (IFCJ), headquartered in Chicago and Jerusalem, was founded in 1983 by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein for the purpose of building bridges of cooperation and understanding between both faith communities and together supporting Israel and Jews in need throughout the world. To date, the IFCJ has raised two-thirds of a billion dollars to support programs aiding the sick, elderly, orphaned and at-risk populations in Israel, the former Soviet Union, Ethiopia, India, Latin America, and Arab countries. For more information about IFCJ programs and projects, visit http://www.ifcj.org.
MEDIA NOTE: Photos and video footage of food distributions in the former Soviet Union and Israel are available on request by contacting IFCJ Communications at: media(at)ifcj(dot)org or by calling (312) 641-7200.

![]() World of Jewish Launches Networking Site For Business, Politics, Dating, Jobs, Health and Culture
Jeruslaem, Israel (PRWEB) July 19, 2007 The World of Jewish website, a totally free Jewish social network, was launched officially last week from Israel. The new site already has thousands of users, showing clearly that it is filling a much needed niche in the world of the Jewish internet, especially that of Jewish dating and social networking.
The website offers its users everything from dating, a Jewish Yellow Pages and news to real estate, travel and political discussion forums. The new Jewish social networking site will be using conventional blogs, Wikis, personal and business profiles, photographs and uploaded videos for its members to create or join interest groups, collaborate on Jewish and Israeli projects, and create collections of files for Jewish education and work, advocacy and entertainment.
Also, the site is translated into five languages, English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish and French. This, according to its creator, David Trombka, makes the membership “far more interactive and non-exclusive. We already have Jews from all the continents, excluding Antarctica. But I don’t think there is even a Habad representation in Antarctica, so I guess we are alright …”
Trombka explains: “As opposed to other networking sites which link members according to vague interest parameters, the World of Jewish produces very specific interest oriented networking based on simple and quick questionnaires for each interest. One can find exactly what he or she is looking for in sections such as politics, mysticism, cuisine, philosophy, education, history, science, medicine (including alternative medicine), literature, religion and more.”
There is even a women’s only section. Trombka stresses that the need for a women’s only section stems primarily from the negative experiences women have had on the strictly dating sites. “Women need a kind of room unto themselves, but it is not only for dating. There is a wide range of issues that Jewish women confront daily from single parenthood, to religiosity, to dating and financial planning.”
David Trombka, a native North American who now lives and works in Israel, created the World of Jewish website in order to offer the general Jewish community and especially the Jewish dating community with a safer and richer experience than currently exists on other sites. “As opposed to all the other Jewish dating sites, which are strictly one dimensional and open to lies and manipulations because of this single dimensionality, the World of Jewish is a much safer site. Women can find men in the education section, for example, and develop a conversation with them about education, or philosophy or mysticism or whatever other interests they have shown to have. In this way, the sexual tension is down and the honesty and depth are up.”
This provides a safer and actually more meaningful Jewish social networking environment where people can really get to know each other before deciding to go on to the Jewish dating environment. Whereas once they would not enter Jewish dating sites, for whatever reason, they feel more comfortable joining the World of Jewish. Beyond that, it follows that the World of Jewish also provides a great platform for Jews not at all interested in dating, but rather in one of the many other interest sections provided. “Because of the many interests,” Trombka states, “the World of Jewish provides a service for all Jewish people, married or otherwise, as opposed to the strictly singles population of the Jewish dating services.”
The creator and investors of the World of Jewish have a profound interest in creating a site that is meaningful to the entire Jewish world and addresses much more than just social interests. As such, they have also linked in with a news service and maintain an “anti-Semitism watch” section as well. They hope that the site will provide a portal to all of Jewry, from secular to ultra-Orthodox, as the Jewish world and the State of Israel enter into the stormy weather of our times.
The owners of WOJ want to keep the site absolutely free. “Why pay the existing Jewish dating sites or any other similar site tens of dollars a month when they can have the exact same service plus so much more at World of Jewish?” asks Trombka. “Also, why just define everything for the members from the outset. Interaction is the name of the game these days and it is hoped that our members will define their needs and goals and contribute to our platform. We are very open to this.”
The World of Jewish is linked to and is creating cooperation with such organizations as Infolive.tv, Kabbalah.tv, Yideoz.com, Nefesh b’nefesh and Taglit – birthright. As such, the World of Jewish is a constantly evolving site, new features or options being added all the time, and yet it has a very friendly user interface to allow its members to hone in on exactly it is that they want. The World of Jewish team believes that their placing faith in the people will be rewarded. They believe that people will sign up for free and that eventually they will host a large enough membership level so that anybody can pretty much find what they are looking for. Consistent with their philosophy, they leave it up to you, the user.

![]() Jewish Organizations Work Together to Seek Recognition of the Rights of Jewish Refugees from Arab Lands
New York, NY (PRWEB) December 1, 2005 The ‘International Society for Sephardic Progress’ (ISFSP) is pleased to announce that it has partnered with ‘Justice for Jews from Arab Countries’ in their international campaign to seek recognition of the rights of Jewish refugees from Arab lands.
In 1945, there were more than 870,000 Jews living in Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Iran, Iraq and Yemen. Many of their communities dated back over 2,500 years. Throughout 1947-48 Jews were persecuted and killed, their property and belongings confiscated. The dispossession of these Jews is among the most significant yet little known injustices against humanity of the past century.
This issue, little known outside of the Jewish community, was brought to the forefront when Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) introduced House Resolution 311 calling on the international community to recognize Jewish refugees who, as the resolution states:
“Fled Arab countries because they faced a campaign of ethnic cleansing and were forced to leave behind land, private homes, personal effects, businesses, community assets and thousands of years of their Jewish heritage and history.”
Justice for Jews from Arab Countries has been active in obtaining international declarations recognizing the rights of these Jewish refuges and preparing a comprehensive historical and legal dossier on this issue for review by the Quartet (United States, United Nations, European Union and the Russian Federation).
The ISFSP will be joining Justice for Jews from Arab Countries’ coalition in their continuing efforts to acknowledge and compensate Jewish refugees from Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Iran, Iraq and Yemen.
In March of 2006, the International Society for Sephardic Progress will be assisting in the global campaign that Justice for Jews from Arab Countries will be launching in 14 nations. The ISFSP will facilitate in the documentation of first-hand accounts of Jewish experiences in Arab countries, and the ISFSP will act as a liaison to Sephardic communities in Southern and Central America for Justice for Jews from Arab Countries.
Stanley Urman, executive director of Justice for Jews from Arab Countries invited the ISFSP to join the coalition, and in addition, invited Rabbi Nissim Elnecave, co-director of the ISFSP, to serve as a member of the Justice for Jews from Arab Countries Rabbinical Committee.
Justice for Jews from Arab Countries is a coalition of Jewish communal organizations operating under the auspices of various Jewish groups including the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, American Jewish Congress, and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.
Editor’s Note: The International Society for Sephardic Progress is a Jewish cultural organization committed to both the living Sephardic community that progresses with each generation, as well as perpetuating Sephardic history and culture through educational programs. The organization was founded as a national Sephardic organization with the unique intent to also focus on the international community. Activities of the organization are centered on projects and issues both in the United States and abroad.
