Houston, Texas (PRWEB) March 02, 2012

Could Hamantaschen be going mainstream? According to Bobby Jucker, 5th generation baker and co-owner of Three Brothers Bakery, “Based on our daily sales, I believe the Hamantaschen will take on a life similar to the bagel or ruggelach. In 2011 we sold approximately 35,000.” Hamantaschen, a triangle shaped cookie filled with usually poppy, prune or apricot, and sold in most places only during the Jewish holiday of Purim are found daily at Three Brothers Bakery in none other than Houston, Texas.

This delectable delight named Hamantaschen, literally meaning Haman’s Pockets, but also called Haman’s Ears, or French, Napoleon or Patriot Hats has been sold daily for about 15 years at Three Brothers Bakery in Houston, Texas. “The daily production began when a non-Jewish customer, Mrs. Rodriguez, would call every two weeks for two or three dozen hamantaschen, so we’d make extra, and they were selling, so we started making them daily,” explained Jucker. But now Jucker is seeing them emerge as Christmas gifts and even eaten in coffee houses.

Three Brothers Bakery’s triangular shaped pockets are filled with the traditional poppyseed, prune or apricot and also one will find cherry, raspberry, blueberry, lemon, cheese, date, peach, strawberry, or chocolate filled. The top three are poppy, chocolate and apricot fillings. During Purim the Hamantaschen are made either with yeast dough or a secret cookie dough recipe, which is kept securely in a safe. The same cookie dough can also be found at the bottom of all their award winning pies, for it also serves as their crust.

When asked if most of his clientele was Jewish, Jucker replied, “90% + of our customer base is not Jewish, but as we now serve our fourth generation of customer, they have come to enjoy the cookie and hence their children like them, so the demand keeps growing.”

They ship well, so Three Brothers Bakery ranks them in their top 10 best selling baked goods online. Jucker ended by saying, “Thank you Mrs. Rodriguez for creating a bakery trend we hope will be passed on from generation to generation.”

About Three Brothers Bakery

Three Brothers Bakery has a long and fascinating history, with its origins in Chrzanow, Poland dating back to 1825. Later, World War II changed the business and lives of the Juckers forever, when members of the family were imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps.

The original Three Brothers Bakery at 4036 S. Braeswood Blvd and owned by Bobby, Janice and Estelle Jucker, continues to operate a full-service, scratch bakery making savory Eastern European style breads and pastries, cookies, a full line of specialty dessert cakes and pies, as well as custom birthday, special occasion, wedding and grooms’ cakes with many products dairy-free – perfect for those who are lactose intolerant.

The Three Brothers Bakery pecan pie was named “…the best mail order pecan pie America has to offer…” by Country Living magazine and most recently Bobby Jucker competed in Food Network Challenge, seen on Food Network’s Outrageous Food – highlighting their Pumpecapple Piecake, named Pastry Chef of the Year at The Houston Culinary Awards and awarded in January The Knot Best of Weddings 2012 Pick for the 3rd year in a row. Three Brothers Bakery is a certified Woman Owned Business through WBENC and a State of Texas HUB.

Jerusalem, Israel (PRWEB) July 2, 2007

Aish.com (http://www.aish.com), the leading Judaism website, and Jewlarious.com (http://www.jewlarious.com), the leading Jewish humor website, have released a short film titled “Boycotting Israel” (http://www.aish.com/movies/israelboycott.asp) that addresses the unfortunately timely issue of boycotts against Israel. Presently, the British University and College Union is discussing a motion to boycott all Israeli academics. Some groups on college campuses across North America and Europe have lobbied for similar action. Other campaigns on the Internet encourage people to boycott all Israeli products and actually list Israeli companies and the products that they manufacture.

These boycott attempts run counter to the spirit of free and open academic inquiry. But beyond this is a great irony: not only do they hurt Israelis, but they hurt Palestinians, too. This was made evident recently by Sari Nusseibeh, president of the Palestinian al-Quds University located in East Jerusalem, who said that Israeli Academics have been amongst the most progressive and peace-minded people around the world, and that boycotting them would hurt the cause of peace in the Middle East.

With this as a backdrop, Boycotting Israel takes a humorous look at what the world would look like if people actually followed through on their boycott attempt. The result is outrageous.

Boycotting Israel stars Lindsay Ames, Dan Galea, Richard Rabkin and Josh Rachlis, and was directed by Josh Rachlis who has worked for over 10 years in advertising and television. The film was edited by Jason Grebeski, and the sound was mixed by Ian Morris at RMW Music.

Aish.com is the largest Judaism website with 3 million monthly visits and 260,000 unique email subscribers. Aish.com features content on spirituality, dating, parenting, Israel and the Holocaust, plus a live webcam from the Western Wall, cutting-edge blogs, and innovative short films.

Jewlarious.com is a weekly web magazine featuring videos of Jewish comedians, a database of Jewish jokes, and original short films.

The websites are both divisions Aish HaTorah, a network of Jewish educational centers in 35 branches on five continents, headquartered in Jerusalem near the Western Wall.

Washington D.C. (PRWEB) January 11, 2012

Buddy Drew – The Musical (http://www.buddydrew.com) and 1st Stage Theater (http://www.1ststagespringhill.com) in Tysons Corner, Va., are partnering to bring Buddy Drew – The Musical to the stage. “You might even say fate is involved in this melding of the minds” says Adam Levowitz, “when you consider that Buddy Drew – The Musical is the inspirational story of a boy with the odds against him who overcomes racial bias, unsettling family dynamics and negative public opinion to become a man he is proud to be. It is just the kind of production that 1st Stage Theater thrives on – inspiring and educational, a place where young talent can flourish and develop into a respectable career.”

As part of this new partnership, Buddy Drew – The Musical will be announcing new debut dates in early spring of 2012. Check the Buddy Drew website, http://www.buddydrew.com, for show dates and “Like” the Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/BuddyDrewtheMusical to stay on top of the latest news about the musical.

1st Stage Theater was founded to fill the gap between educational and professional theater, and to focus on learning as a lifelong process. Started by a group of teachers, artists and actors, the theater strives to enrich the lives of young professional artists as well as the community with its diverse ballot of productions. Always looking for new ways to inspire and create authentic experiences for audiences, 1st Stage is excited about debuting Buddy Drew – The Musical.

Based on the real life story of Drew Brown III, Buddy Drew – The Musical is a coming-of-age tale about a black kid from Harlem raised by his white, Jewish grandparents in Brighton Beach right smack dab in the middle of the prize fight known as the Civil Rights Movement. His black father, Bundini Brown, a street hustler from Harlem and also the corner man for the heavyweight champion of the world Muhammad Ali, married Rhoda Palestine, a nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn. Together they made history and Drew Brown III.

Growing up with a life as shaky as a yarmulke on an Afro, Buddy Drew must contend with an absentee father who spent the better part of his life fostering the career, affection and respect of his “other” son, Muhammad Ali. Buddy Drew finds himself sparing with the world’s greatest boxer for the love of Bundini. Like many father/son, love/hate relationships, Buddy Drew searches for his own identity and when is finally able to forgive, though he can never forget, fulfills his destiny prophesied at his own Bar Mitzvah speech and himself becomes a Real Jew. And today he is a man.

Buddy Drew – The Musical features a rock score by DC based composer Adam B. Levowitz (http://www.adamlevowitz.com) and book filled with wit and charm by and Houston based playwright Ashley Whitrock. This is not a Jewish musical like Fiddler on the Roof, or a black musical like The Wiz, but an American musical because as Buddy Drew will tell you: “I am not an African American! I am not an African American! I am not an African American! I am an American who happens to be black and Jewish and I keep Kosher and I eat pork rinds.” Visit http://www.buddydrew.com.

Norwalk, CT (PRWEB) January 18, 2012

XLerant, a leader in powerful budget preparation software, has signed five new clients in the higher education marketplace:

Rhode Island School of Design, a four-year art college in Providence; 2,300 students
St. Joseph’s College of Maine, a Catholic liberal arts school near Portland; 1,000 students
Fisher College, a private business college in Boston; 1,000 students
Roberts Wesleyan College, a Christian college outside Rochester, NY; 2,000 students
Touro College, a Jewish-sponsored college in New York City; 19,000 students

XLerant serves several higher ed clients and is in advanced talks with more than two dozen others. It also works in the non-profit, insurance, and publishing and media markets, to name a few.

Linda Murphy Church, Budget Director of the Rhode Island School of Design, said she recommended adoption of BudgetPak software after evaluating it against the Malcolm Baldrige Excellence in Higher Education framework.

“As an institution serious about excellence, we need the functionality of BudgetPak. It allows us to manage resources according to our strategic plan and evolving priorities,” Murphy Church said. “The entire campus is engaged in the budget process, presenting ideas in alignment with the strategic plan.”

XLerant Founder Lawrence Serven said, “As administrators face mounting economic pressure, they realize traditional spreadsheets are the equivalent of a slide rule. Leaders determined to have thriving universities are seeking technology that allows their budgets to be change agents.

“With Excel alone, administrators can’t tie budgeting and finance to strategy. Their financial teams are mired in the management of error-prone spreadsheets rather than doing insightful analyses. Their deans and department chairs are frustrated because they’re not finance people; they don’t have vast spreadsheet expertise.”

XLerant’s BudgetPak changes all of that. Working with any general ledger system, it includes a series of prompts that allow users to tailor their budgets to the nuances of their departments. It also gives financial experts extensive ability to analyze data in a multitude of up-to-date views.

“BudgetPak lets us deploy resources with maximum impact,” said Holly Braley, Controller at St. Joseph’s College of Maine. “Our strategy and budget now work hand-in-hand. Done well, a budget is effective. Done poorly, it’s a hindrance.

“With BudgetPak, I finally can do my job. Rather than collecting data from across the college, validating it, entering it on spreadsheets, that’s now done by the individuals who ‘own’ the numbers. I now spend my time managing the process. At any time, I can easily analyze our 60-plus budgets and strategically help guide the college forward.”

XLerant recently released a study of higher education budget directors from across the United States. Two-thirds gave their Excel-driven budgeting process a “C” grade or lower. They said the top complaint among department heads is not being able to own their numbers because of restrictive, difficult-to-use spreadsheets. BudgetPak, in contrast, improves financial controls and gives users the flexibility to develop and manage their budgets easily, in ways that match the needs of their departments.

About XLerant

XLerant is a software solutions company that builds and implements innovative, practical, and incredibly powerful corporate budget preparation software for mid-sized and large organizations, energizing a “Culture of Budget Accountability” among users. The company has a dedicated focus on higher education.

XLerant’s premiere budgeting and planning application, BudgetPak, replaces spreadsheet-based budgeting and provides maximum user flexibility and financial controls. Improved communication, greater ownership of the numbers and increased transparency enable companies to better manage financial performance throughout the fiscal year.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) May 16, 2005

A small but vocal element is voicing opposition to the traditional Western practice of dividing time, measuring events as occurring before or after the birth of Jesus or B.C and A.D., according to a survey by The Global Language Monitor (GLM), using the Predictive Quantities Indicator© (PQI).

The survey found that in the worldwide electronic and print media, and on the Internet, the current convention of A.D. and B.C. was found to be nearly 50 times as prevalent as that of the C.E. and B.C.E. convention. Nevertheless, the fact that the newer conventions were now found to be used at all indicates significant inroads, where until recently none existed.

The C.E. and B.C.E. conventions were introduced about a century ago in the Jewish and Scientific communities, but have been adopted increasingly by those who want to place some distance or obscure the Judeo-Christian roots of Western Civilization. The issue has become increasingly polarizing on college campuses, school textbook publishers, and in the various religious communities.

The Western Calendar is especially pervasive because all major electronic and computer systems have it deeply embedded in their basic instruction sets, or operating systems. This means that all electronic commerce, commercial applications, scientific, airlines, electronic games, automobiles, clocks, etc. are based on the Western Calendar.

“As with most language-based PC issues, the battle is intense, however, no authority or group can mandate linguistic change, said Paul JJ Payack, President of The Global Language Monitor. “The fact is that both C.E. or A.D. both acknowledge the centrality of Jesus to the Western Calendar, (actually shorthand for ‘Western Christendom’), since both A.D. and C.E. both refer to the birth of Jesus as the time marker for the West.”

(In the aftermath of the French Revolution, the revolutionaries made an ill-fated and short-lived attempt to restart the Western Calendar, which was to begin on September 22, 1792: the day of the declaration of the first French Republic. Months were cited by Roman numerals and named after meteorological conditions.)

Payack added, “Jesus, of course, was born in 749 AUC (ab urbe condita – from the founding of the City), since the Roman Calendar was dated from the mythical founding of the City by Romulus in 753 B.C. It is also interesting to note that when Dominus Exiguus, the 5th Century monk, created the current Calendar, he miscalculated, which is why it is now generally accepted that Jesus was born in the year 4 B.C, that is four years before his birth.”

There are several major calendar systems in addition to the Western system currently in use. These include the Hebrew, Islamic, Buddhist, and Chinese. The Hebrew Calendar dates from the Creation (current year 5765); the Islamic Calendar dates from the Hegira (current year 1425); the Chinese Calendar dates from the Emperor Huangdi, in 2637 B.C.; and the Buddhist Calendar dates from the birth of the Buddha, 543 years B.C., making 2005 the year 2548 of the Buddhist Era.

The Predictive Quantities Indicator is a proprietary algorithm that tracks specified words and phrases in the media and on the Internet. The words and phrases are tracked in relation to their frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets. In this case, the words tracked were Anno Domini (A.D., literally ‘Year of the Lord’), Before Christ (B.C.), the Common Era (C.E.) and Before the Common Era (B.C.E.)

The results of the survey were released earlier today; for more information, go to http://www.LanguageMonitor.com. The Global Language Monitor analyzes and catalogues the latest trends in word usage and word choices, and their impact on the various aspects of culture. The GLM is supported by a worldwide assemblage of linguists, professional wordsmiths, and bibliophiles to help monitor the latest trends in the evolution (and demise) of language, word usage and word choices.

About the Global Language Monitor

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 3, 2008

Bob Newhart, winner of three Grammy Awards, a Peabody, an Emmy and the Mark Twain Prize for Humor, and author of his new show-business autobiography, I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This, making him perhaps the most celebrated comedian-humorist-actor-author-former accountant in show-business history, this summer took time away from his busy schedule to serve as finalist judge, for the 2008 winner of the Robert Benchley Society Award for Humor. Newhart chose, as first-place winner, New York City-based humor columnist, satirist, Madeleine Begun Kane.

In a personal note Newhart told Kane her essay, “Guide for The Opera Impaired,” finished first because it was “the most Benchleyesque. . . “I don’t know if Robert Benchley ever commented on operas in his writings, but it is certainly a subject I suspect he would have handled exactly as you did,” Newhart said.

Newhart enjoyed judging the essays, “It certainly brought back the memories of when I first started reading Robert Benchley and the joy his writing brought,” Newhart said, but, “the judging was difficult because the finalists were so good.”

Newhart has always credited Benchley as a major influence on his humor. In an earlier interview with past Robert Benchley Society award winner Horace J. Digby on A3Radio Newhart said, “Really good writing is timeless. Benchley created–like the persona Jack Benny created–a man who was very much full of himself, but in a self-deprecating way.”

In his book, I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This, Newhart tells readers, “My influences came from the more absurdist side of life. I’ve never forgotten the time I heard that a lady in Britain published her correspondence with Winston Churchill, so Robert Benchley decided to publish his correspondence with George Bernard Shaw. Benchley’s correspondence consisted of letters accusing Shaw of taking his umbrella at the theater and asking for it to be returned. Shaw kept writing back saying, ‘I don’t know who you are and I don’t have your umbrella.’”

In a recent letter Newhart told Digby, “Larry Gilbert, writer on Your Show of Shows, A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum and others too numerous to remember, once wrote, the comedy writer (and comedian) sees the world through a different lens. There is no question in my mind that Benchley helped construct the comedic lens through which I view the world. I think his [Benchley's] influence is certainly discernable in ‘Abe Lincoln’ and ‘King Kong.’”

“I was a voracious reader of the works of Robert Benchley,” Newhart wrote in I Shouldn’t Be Doing This, “and at least on a subconscious level, one of Benchley’s essays influenced me to go to law school. It was about a Walter Mitty-type character who . . . made an absolute fool out of the opposing counsel to the point where the jury was applauding and even the judge was enjoying the show.”

Fortunately for the world of humor Benchley’s “more absurdist” influence on Newhart won out.

Kane’s essays have appeared in Family Circle, America Online, Newsday, The Chicago Tribune, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Miami Herald,, The Houston Chronicle, The New York Times, The L. A. Times Syndicate, Knight-Rider/Tribune News Service, and on National Public Radio. She bills herself, as “Mad” Kane, political satirist, parodist and recovering lawyer. Kane holds a law degree from St. John’s University School of Law and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in music from the California Institute of the Arts. Her musical talent lead to a faculty position in the Music department of Southern Methodist University, Dallas,Texas, and an oboist chair in the Dallas Symphony.

In 1995 Kane’s humor was honored by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, and her website, madkane.com, has received accolades from USA Today, Shift Magazine, Maxim Magazine, The Guardian and other media.

On learning Newhart had ranked her essay first, Kane was uncharacteristically at a loss for words, saying only, “Yikes! I can’t believe it! Thanks! . . . I’m still in shock . . .”

Kane had celebrated being named a finalist by writing:

“I can barely maintain my sobriety

Cuz the great Robert Benchley Society

Held a contest and wow,

I’m a finalist now.

Will I win the top prize? High anxiety!”

Remembering that limerick, she added, “Now that I’ve actually won first prize, I’m thrilled and honored, but being Jewish, I’m still anxious.”

The second, third and fourth place finalists selected by Newhart to receive the Robert Benchley Society Medal of Merit for 2008 are: Mike Tuck of Hopkins, MN, in second place for his essay, “Welcome To America;” Jesse Levy of North Hollywood, CA, in third place for, “How to Watch a Sad Movie and Retain Your Manliness;” and Denise G. Weeks of Richardson, TX, in fourth place for “How to Start Your Own Band.” The winning essays can be viewed at The Robert Benchley Society Website.

Denise Weeks (a.k.a. Shalanna Collins) a home-grown Texas humorist, novelist, pianist, belly dancer, baton twirler, software engineer, National Merit Scholar, and graduate of Southern Methodist University, is also a true Robert Benchley lover. One of her hobbies is collecting Robert Benchley first editions.

Weeks’ husband first advised her not to get too excited about “this contest thing.” But when he learned Bob Newhart was reading her essay, hubby quickly forgot his own advice. Weeks’ reaction to placing in the top four was, “Aaaaa . . . I believe a ‘Yay!’ is in order now!’

“Hooray! Thank you so much (and many thanks to Mr. Newhart),” said third-place winner, Jesse Levy, a New York City transplant to Los Angeles. “I am thrilled beyond words,” he continued. “In fact, right now I’m making sounds to express my thrilledness but they can’t be conveyed in an email without doing some small damage to the keyboard.”

Levy keenly appreciates that, “Essays are tough, especially at 500 words. I wrote my entry in a Benchleyesq frenzy. I was reading a lot of Sweet Old Bob at the time and the influence shows. Benchley has always been my favorite humorist.”

Levy said he was “absolutely thrilled” just to learn that Bob Newhart was going to be reading his entry. “To go from being an accountant to being a stand-up comic has always been a dream of mine,” Levy said, in homage to Newhart’s early career. Then, after reflecting for a moment on his own career which includes filmmaker, actor, radio disk jockey, writer, director and humorist, Levy added, “I guess I’d better start hitting those accounting books.”

Mike Tuck, of Hopkins, MN, had this to say about being first runner-up, “Thanks for the wonderful news. I assume this means I get my $ 10 entry fee back.”

Tuck first read Robert Benchley 30 years ago and immediately realized he’d found his favorite author. Even today “All who value humor look up to Robert Benchley and wonder, ‘How the hell does he make it look so easy?’ . . . For this Benchley aficionado it’s a bit numbing having my name linked with his,” Tuck said.

Tuck began writing humor as a young man growing up in Minneapolis when he started selling a few jokes and gags, soon earning a tidy sum of $ 30 a week, “and this is back when $ 30 a week was like $ 20 a week,” Tuck said.

“Knowing Bob Newhart actually read something I wrote (even if he barely got through the first paragraph before crumpling and tossing it) is intimidating. I have grown up with Newhart’s albums, stand-up, movies and television to understand and appreciate what a brilliant humorist he is,” Tuck said. “This would be the highlight of my career if I had one,” Tuck said.

Robert Benchley rose to fame in the 1920s writing for Harvard Lampoon, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Life magazine and as humor columnist for the Hearst newspaper chain. Benchley appeared in more than eighty short films and feature length motion pictures. He is credited, along with Dorothy Parker, with founding the notorious Algonquin Round Table.

Benchley and his colleagues, all members of the famed Algonquin Round Table luncheon group, dominated print media for nearly two decades, creating a new face for American humor.

Many of America’s brightest comic talents including, this year’s finalist judge Bob Newhart, Dave Barry, Woody Allen, Steve Martin, Erma Bombeck, Shelly Berman, Jonathan Winters, Richard Pryor, Steve Allen, Russell Baker and Dan Rowan acknowledged Benchley’s impact on their work,

“The book that most impressed me when I was growing up and influenced my approach to comedy would have been any book by Robert Benchley, or specifically My Ten Years in a Quandary,” Newhart said. “I was very much influenced by Robert Benchley.”

Benchley’s warm, self-effacing comic writing style made it nearly the template for modern humor essays, said humor writer Ed Tasca. Tasca holds the singular distinction of placing among the top four Robert Benchley Society entries for three consecutive years.

Other finalists in 2008 are, in alphabetical order, Cornelius “Con” Chapman of Weston, MA, Eileen Mitchell of Palatine, IL, Joseph Nebus of Jackson, NJ, Brenda Pontiff of Los Angeles, CA, John Thom of Los Angeles, CA, and Sharon Elizabeth Wood of Cary, NC.

The Robert Benchley Society Award for Humor competition is open to amateurs and professionals alike. W. Bruce Cameron, whose book Eight Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter inspired John Ritter’s Emmy Award winning television series for ABC/Disney, and who’s newest book, Eight Simple Rules for Marrying My Daughter, is now in book stores everywhere, took top Benchley Society Award honors in 2006. Last year’s top award went to Daniel Montville of Oak Park, Illinois for his hilarious essay, How to Write a Book.

“All entries are read blind, so neither Bob Newhart, nor any of the preliminary judges

knew who wrote any of the essays. That way the competition is entirely merit based,” said 2005 Robert Benchley Society Award winner Horace J. Digby, who has returned to help with judging in the past three years.

This year’s preliminary judges include, Benchley Society member Dwain Buck, 2005 Benchley Society award winner Horace J. Digby, author of Robert Benchley An Annotated Bibliography Gordon E. Ernst, writer Eileen Forster Keck, puzzle designer Chris Morgan, radio personality Tom Saunders, and Robert Benchley Society chairperson David Trumbull.

“I’m happy for the winners,” said finalist Brenda Pontiff, “but darn! I will enter again next year and see if I make the top ten one more time. I’ll be the poor man’s Ed Tasca – he placed 3 times, maybe I can get on the top ten list 3 times.”

David Trumbull, the Robert Benchley Society’s national chairperson, joined in Newhart’s sentiments. “I believe Mr. Benchley would be pleased to see how this year’s contestants are keeping alive his tradition of warm, genial, witty humor,” Trumbull said.

“I hope future judges are as lucky as I was in the quality of their finalists,” Newhart concluded.

The Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research has awarded more than $ 40 million in grants since 1997 to young cancer researchers.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) April 26, 2011

Every year since 1997 The Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research has selected research scientists and medical doctors from across the United States to receive two year grants under the Foundation’s on-going Kimmel Scholar program. This year’s selection brings the total to 202 talented cancer researchers who have been provided with grant money since the Foundation’s inception, each receiving a $ 200,000 award to further a specific cancer research project.

The Kimmel Scholar Awards were created to advance the careers of gifted, young scientists involved in cancer research. Those selected are chosen for demonstrating the greatest promise and innovation in their work, must be in the early stages of their research career, and have not progressed far enough to have received major grants from the National Cancer Institute or other funding sources.

Sidney Kimmel, the organization’s founder and chairman of the board of the Jones Group Inc. and president of Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, meets each year with the Foundation’s medical advisory board as the esteemed group of leading cancer doctors narrows down the applicants from a pool of approximately 150. Since 1997 Sidney Kimmel has contributed more than $ 550 million to cancer centers and cancer research and another $ 100 million to the arts and Jewish continuity. Kimmel is a member of Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge having already committed more than half of his net worth to charitable causes.

Many of the exceptional young scientists who have their careers ‘jump started’ by the Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research go on to receive millions of dollars in funding from the NCI and NIH and make significant contributions to the field of cancer research. Many report that they might never have achieved such success without first receiving the Kimmel grant.

The Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research has also funded four cancer centers at San Diego, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Thomas Jefferson University and Johns Hopkins University. The gift to Johns Hopkins, $ 150 million, is the largest gift ever received by that institution. In the area of arts and culture, The Kimmel Foundation has supported the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia as well as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C., among others.
